ABOUT THE

ASC SPANISH TRAINING SYSTEM

DCTENNIS lives and breathes the ASC Spanish Training System. A proven method among tennis professionals (male and female) to be the most effective at ensuring athletes achieve their best tennis level. It applies to tennis (at any level or age) as much as it applies to life in general. Professional and recreational players, alike, are capable of working the same drills and are expected to do them well (or at least as well as they can) in the most encouraging way possible. And the reason players love it, is because they come out believing in themselves. "Because Spanish-system players work much harder in the practice sessions, in the matches they don’t mind doing what they have to do to get behind the ball, and they know that if they can get behind the ball, they’re going to have more winning options", Emilio Sanchez, co-founder of the system, explains. Movement and positioning are absolutely at the core of the system.

THE ASC 4 PILLARS OF ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT

The combination of  four theoretical pillars of athletic development has the objective of pushing players to achieve their top performance and help them reach their ideal competitive state. In other words, in today's tennis, you need to excel at all four areas of athletic development to become an Elite Tennis Player.

PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS IN TENNIS

Each stage of the Player's Developmental Pathway is related to the aspects that must be consolidated and the objectives that must be reached during each stage, according  to the approximate age* of the player.

*Note that age is merely a guide and not an absolute rule in defining a player's developmental stage at any given point in time.

 1. INITIATION
 8-12 Years Old

"When players arrive at this stage, they have been sharpening their strokes, their agility, balance and coordination. Now, they learn how to place the ball intentionally and position themselves properly in the court.

The key goals are to control the body position, learn different spins, serve with a correct grip, develop rally continuity, learn how to hit volleys, overheads, lobs and approach shots."

 2. FORMATION
 12-14 Years Old

At the pre-Formation point, players should become consistent, have good technique and know how to place the ball successfully in all areas of the court.

During the Formation stage, players are trained mainly on the tactical, physical and mental aspects of competition. They must have balance with their body, accuracy with their shots, and adjust to the appropriate height, depth and distance from the ball."

 3. ADVANCED
 14-17 Years Old

Work continues on tactics. Match situations are emphasized. Start with drills, continue with control exercises, and try to use elements from both in actual competition. More emphasis is placed on the physical/mental pillars. Now they start to compete at a level where the physical and mental development of their opponents is becoming more consistent. This period is special to many players, especially those who develop more slowly. Suddenly they start to see their potential and feel more confident about challenging anyone.

 4. TRANSITION
 18-20 Years Old

In the Transition stage the real battle begins. Players are now able to truly recognize if they can successfully compete at a high level, or not. At  this point, it becomes crucial for the player and coach to start building up a pattern of training and competing that is steady and effective.

A high level performance is sometimes achieved, but still far from steady success.

 5. ELITE
 21 Years Old and older

At the Pre-Elite stage the player is almost at the top. The competition is ferocious from the top 200 players, and only about 10 players will rotate inside the top 100 pros. The player’s needs are almost the  same as the ones in the  Elite stage.

In the Elite stage, the success is a state of mind that is only for the ones that have worked very hard. To accomplish it, the      player needs to develop so much in every aspect that is critical to learn, listen and practice every different shot, pattern or behavior that will really make a difference.
